The next generation of competitive swimwear technology, the adidas HYDROFOIL swimsuit, has been approved by the international governing body of swimming (FINA) and worn by several adidas swimmers during recent meets in preparation for the World Championships next month in Rome, Italy.
Britta Steffen set a world record in the100M freestyle last Thursday at the German Championships with a time of 52.85 and then beat this time in Saturday’s final, stopping the clock in 52.56 seconds wearing the new HYDROFOIL swimsuit from adidas. Several other athletes set national records wearing the suit recently including Helge Meeuw from Germany and David Davies from the U.K.
Following the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, adidas began developing the HYDROFOIL technology using a new ultra lightweight and paper thin woven fabric, which features a fully laminated PU foil to ensure that the athlete and suit stay drier, lighter and more slick in the water. The adidas HYDROFOIL swimsuit is designed to reduce drag and improve laminar flow of water around the body, resulting in more fluid and faster swimming. In addition, the suit provides improved body compression to increase stability, efficiency, endurance and breathability.
“In essence, the adidas HYDROFOIL swimsuit molds the swimmer into a more streamlined shape and helps them to move more efficiently through the water,” said Christine Barth, Business Unit Direct for adidas Swim. “We’re proud to provide many of the top athletes competing in the FINA World Championships with the next generation of swimsuit technology and we hope that the HYDROFOIL swimsuit helps our athletes and brand to outperform the competition next month in Rome.”
adidas athlete and double Olympic Gold Medalist, Britta Steffen, has been using the new suit recently during training and has reported promising times. “I’m continually working with adidas to test and provide feedback on their latest swimsuit technologies,” said Steffen. “The new adidas HYDROFOIL swimsuit is the most advanced and comfortable one I’ve tried to date as it doesn’t absorb any water and reduces drag for a smooth and consistent feel in the water.”
In addition to Britta Steffen, adidas athletes and worldclass swimmers Helge Meeuw of Germany, France’s Coralie Balmy, Jo Jackson and David Davies from the UK, Australians Cate Campbell and Jessicah Schipper will also be provided with the HYDROFOIL swimsuit in preparation for the World Championships in Rome this July.
