 3 stripes, 5 series, 35 models

Herzogenaurach, February 3, 2005

3 stripes, 5 series, 35 models

Most iconic sneaker makes people queuing all over the world – Queues in front of sneaker stores in Tokyo, London and New York mark the 35th international birthday celebration of the most iconic shoe ever produced: the adidas Superstar.

To commemorate, adidas has invited icons from the worlds of music, art and fashion to create five different series of in total 35 unique Superstars to honour a special place or time in the Superstar’s history. This anniversary collection reflects not only the versatility and timelessness of the shoe but also defines the Superstar as something unique with a rich cultural tapestry. The different styles tell the story from the humble and innocent beginnings of the shell toe to the regular fixture in magazines with sightings on catwalks and in film.

Leaders from the worlds of art, photography and graffiti that are historically linked to the Superstar were invited to contribute designs to the Expression series. Organisations such as Walt Disney and The Andy Warhol Foundation as well as street artists Project Playground and Lee Quinones have created seven individually distinctive limited edition Superstars. The first models of these Series are available from this week onwards.

adidas has welcomed artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ian Brown and Roc-A-Fella to contribute to the Music series. To celebrate the anniversary, musicians from a host of genres from street to hip hop, from dance to rock, pay tribute to the shoe with their own distinctive design interpretations of the classic Superstar. Styles from the Music Series will be available from the first week of March onwards.

In 1970 the first Superstar went on sale, establishing the shoe’s 35-year cultural relevance in sport, fashion and design. Within a few years, the shoe was worn by over 75% of all NBA players, it quickly transcended from the basketball court to the street, evolving to become a cultural icon. In 1986 'My adidas' was recorded as a tribute to the brand by Run DMC. The song epitomized the heart and soul of the Superstar. Since then the shoe has become a design classic, embraced in every decade for 35 years and part of every generation’s wardrobes.

The five series - Consortium, Expression, Music, Cities and Anniversary - are rolling out in retail over the course of the next three months. These series are available through various distribution channels and cover a range of price levels. All 35 models are part of an integrated concept with a specially created Superstar 35 logo, each series with the logo in a distinguished colourway.
