A week out from the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics and adidas track and field athletes are moving in to top gear with may looking to defend their world titles in Berlin.
Tyson Gay is poised to play a leading role in what promises to be not only the sporting head-to-head of the year but also the most keenly-anticipated sprint contest of all-time.
Gay, the defending world champion at both the 100m and 200m, is up against the man who ripped the mantle off his back last season with world record runs at both distances. Usain Bolt may be the most celebrated sprinter of the day but, on the evidence of this year’s world rankings, Gay is the fastest.
The 26-year-old American, who is coached by Lance Brauman in Clermont, Florida, has run 9.77sec for 100m and 19.58sec for the longer sprint. His last race before Berlin was over 100m in Stockholm last Friday when he left a high-class field well behind, winning in 9.79sec.
They are the sort of times that in any other era would have guaranteed top billing and the assurance of inevitable victory. But these are remarkable times in the sprinting world. The 100m and 200m finals are not to be missed.
