STORY America’s Darvis Patton has his work cut out if he is to win a medal in Beijing. The American who will run in the 100 meters is up against World Champion Tyson Gay, world record holder Usian Bolt and the former World record holder Asafa Powell. Hear his thoughts on the ‘impossible is nothing’ task in front of him. Can he create one of the greatest sprinting upsets of all time? Patton will also run in the 4x100 meter relay for the United Sates, does he think this would be his best chance for a medal? Derrick Atkins from the Bahamas will also be in his sights how does he rate Atkins? Here Patton’s thoughts on round one of 100 meter qualifying.
EXPECTED PICTURES & SOUND BITES: SOUNDBITE: Darvis Patton q. what do you think of the 100meter line up? Bolt, Gay, Asafa phenomenal athletes you know but I feel my chances are as strong as anybodies, I mean, I made the team, the hardest part is getting out of the United Sates trials it is kind of downhill from now. SOUNDBITE: Darvis Patton What do you think of Usain Bolt? He’s a freak of nature man, he is an amazing athlete, he’s a freak of nature but i think on an Olympic stage at a 100 meter final anything can happen. SOUNDBITE: Darvis Patton Q. what is the atmosphere like in the USA 4x100 meter relay team? We have a nice comradery we have times when we don’t get the baton around like we would want to but once we get it around we are pretty excited because we know we have a great team going out there, we ’re going to put out the best four guys, and even though Tyson wasn’t able to practice with us at the time, me and Tyson are going to do hand offs after the 100meters so we have plenty of time to incorporate him into the hand off. SOUNDBITE: Darvis Patton q. There is alot to do just to get the final of the 100m yes? I think you can’t take any round for granted, I mean this is some peoples dream to get here and they are not going to ease through the rounds you have to advance and that is exactly what i am trying to do. My goal here is to get top two finishes in every round and advance to the final i think anything can happen when you reach the final. SOUNDBITE: Darvis Patton Q. what does it mean to you to get a medal? Words couldn’t describe right now, just because I know I put alot of hard work into this the past couple of years I had injuries and i finally made it through all those injuries and knowing that i did everything the right way and to come away with a medal would be indescribable right now. SOUNDBITE: Darvis Patton Are you expected to win gold when you are on the USA team? I don’t know I guess it started back, my first memory was Carl Lewis coming across the line in the 4x100 coming accross raising his hands winning double gold in the one and the two I guess that set the standard for United States sprinting and i guess we want to uphold that tradition. I think anything short of gold is not failor but it is a kind of a disappointment.

VNR 2 Story US Pole Vaulter Jennifer Stuczynski says she will clear the same heights as Yelena Isinbayeva it’s just a matter of time. Duration: 4.08 mins Location: Beijing, China Language: English Overview: Aug 16th Women's pole vault, qualifying, National Stadium, 9 a.m.-1:10 p.m.
STORY: America’s Jennifer Stuczynski says it’s only a matter of time before she is clearing the same heights as the Olympic and World Record holder Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia. The American who has only been pole vaulting for 4 years says she is still learning to vault but is improving all the time. Stuczynski made an attempt at 5.02m naught point one centimetre higher than the Russian’s world record height, although she failed to clear on all three attempts. Talk of competition appears however inspired the ever consistent Isinbayeva to rise the bar. Her 22nd World Record if anybody is still counting was set outdoors at the Golden Gala in Rome, 5.03m is the new target for any presumptuous challenger to the 26 year olds stead fast pole vaulting crown. Stuczynski spoke of a professional respect for Isinbayeva although she openly admits they are not friends. The American describes herself as a Cinderella athlete in Beijing she’s at the party with no expectations.
EXPECTED PICTURES & SOUND BITES: SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski q. Can you jump as high as Yelena? Yes i think in the last couple of years i have proved alot. It is just a matter of time really things are going really well in practice and i have had some great heights i just have to do it in a meet now. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski q. Does Yelena reputation affect your confidence when competing? Definately not i have alot of confidence and it doesn’t really come from meets it comes from my work ethic and my practice so when i go for those heights i think in the back of my mind i know i can make it and i try to hard, i need to learn how to relax and do it like i do in practice. I think tht is the most important thing if you try to hard that’s when things tighten up and your run is not the same and you pull the pole instead of the proper technique. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski q. Why can you jump high in practice but not produce the same in competition? In practice I focus on one thing really I focus on my run and the rest follows but in a meet I tend to focus more on clearing the bar, and that’s what happens in practice, your mind kind of wonders a little bit and I just need to stay as focused as I do and compete the same way. I think its different when you have three attempts in a meet as to 15 in your back yard. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski q. do you feel great pressure here in Beijing? I think when you are an underdog and the Cinderella of it all you don’t feel that pressure its more of a goal than something to be worried about. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski q. Are you and Yelena friends? Its definitely a professional relationship, you know when you are no the track you both travel a long distance to get there and compete and a lots on the line so its not really a social event and we don’t see each other in the hotel very much if we pass by we say hello, respect but it’s nothing social and best friends. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski q. The higher you jump the higher Yelena extends her world record, does this make things difficult? The way i look at it i mean i don’t want to be negative but the way i look at it is that in 3 years she has only raised it about three centermeters, so that’s how much she has improved in three years, i have just been cliaming and i hope to continue doing that and we will see what happens in another three years where i might be. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski Q. How high can you jump? I think i can jump alot higher i always say i think people will be pleasently surprised you know its just a matter of time i keep saying that but it is if i can do what i do and put everything together and thats the important thing you know when you have one part down and you have to put the next together its just a learning curve for me right now, i’m still figuring it out, I’m still learning how to vault. SOUNDBITES: Jennifer Stuczynski When I talk to lot of people and we talk about the Olympics and they hear I have only been vaulting for 4 years, and I’m going to be incontention for a medal they just laugh at me and they say that is impossible, but I just laugh back and say impossible is nothing.
