STORY
Two-time Olympic and World Champion 400m track star Jeremy Wariner says he is looking forward to running better than he has so far this year. The US athlete is desperate to defend his Olympic title and to break Michael Johnson’s 400m World record. Wariner has been surprisingly tested and beaten this season by fellow American sprinter LaShawn Merritt although the Texan believes its added pressure that helps him to improve.
Merritt produced a shock defeat of Wariner in the US Olympic trails in July and will hope to repeat the achievement in Beijing. Wariner talks about the Merritt factor his mental preparations for the event and how he plans to retain his title. Twenty-four year old Wariner beat Merritt into second place at the World Championships in Osaka last year, will history repeat itself in China this August or will we see a twist in the 400 metre Olympic tale?  Hear what Wariner believes just days before the start of the event.

SOUNDBITES: Jeremy Wariner
Q. How is your fitness and state of mind?
So far I have had a great couple of days work out here in Beijing so fitness wise I’m great I’m ready to go feeling great I’ll be more excited as the days go by and I get closer to my first round so I’m just looking forward to coming out here and running a better race than I have so far this year.
SOUNDBITES: Jeremy Wariner
Q. Has being beaten by LaShawn Merritt upset your state of mind?
It hasn’t affected it at all I know what I did wrong in those races I didn’t run my race the way I usually. I got out fine but I back off a little bit down the back straight and let him get away rather than keep going the way I usually do so that it’s in my past I can use that my advantage if I lose I build on it I look at what I did wrong I new what I did wrong even before the race was over so. I can tell what I have done wrong before I even talk to my coach.
SOUNDBITES: Jeremy Wariner
Q. Is it like being a boxer after you have won everything you don’t want it as much anymore?
You know that’s not the fact for me I have many goals set for myself that I want to achieve even though I have won an Olympic gold medal and two world championship medals and now I am here in Beijing to defend my title. I have so many goals that I want to achieve where I am still striving for something more even though I have done a lot. I still want the world record I still want to be the first one to run 42 seconds and I want to try and get the 4x400 world record while I’m at it, so I have a lot of stuff in front of me that I want to do.
SOUNDBITES: Jeremy Wariner
Q Does having LaShawn chasing you upset your usual focus?
Definitely not at all having someone like LaShawn behind me running times like I do helps me it makes me train harder in practice it motivates me more to make sure I do what I need to do to get better so when I get on the track I am going to have to run faster than I did the year before because I know he is capable of running that fast so I am going to have to run even faster.
SOUNDBITES: Jeremy Wariner
Q. Can you break Michael Johnson’s world 400m record?
I believe I can do it I believe in my heart I can they way I have been training I know I can I am ready for it is just a matter of putting every together at the right time and running exactly how I need to, competitors be there and just go for it and not worry about anything else so at the Olympics I know it is going to be difficult because I want to win and defend my title but at the same time I want to break the world record.
SOUNDBITES: Jeremy Wariner
Q. You already have an Olympic Gold medal can you have the same desire here in Beijing?
I want to defend my title Michael (Johnson) is the only one to have ever defended his title in the 400 meters he has two gold medals so I am trying to do the same thing and then hopefully in 2012  I’ll be fortunate enough to defend another one, to make it a third one if i win here. So that’s what is driving me to make sure i get my title back.

STORY
Olympic 200 meter Champion Veronica Campbell-Brown hinted that the door was not closed to a possible one and two hundred meter double here in Beijing this August. Although Campbell did not qualify for the Beijing 100m event having finished four at the Jamaican trails there has been much talk of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association giving her special dispensation to compete. Brown said it was ‘not over until it is over’ and admitted that the issue was ‘preying on her mind.’  When asked about America’s Allyson Felix she said the two sprinters ‘do not hate each other’ and that she enjoys the rivalry.

The Olympic 200 meter Champion Veronica Campbell-Brown will not relinquish her title lightly. Jamaican Campbell described how she plans to defend the Olympic crown. The 26 year old managed just 2nd place behind Felix in the 200 meters at the World Championships in Osaka Japan last year so she feels she has something to prove in Beijing.

q. Are you over not qualifying for the 100m or is there still a chance to run?
It’s not over until it’s over it’s always in the back of my mind because I see my self from the beginning of the year my main goal was to come here and win the double and I know I am capable of doing it for me to come fourth at the trials is something that is going to be with me for a while. But at the same time I don’t let it overwhelm me or try to worry about it, because I have no control over the past, so I have to move on, sometimes I think about.
SOUNDBITES: Veronica Campbell-Brown
q. Does the rivalry between you and Felix side track you focus?
Absolutely not I think rivalry is good for the sport at least your more driven to make sure you are in the top of your game on the track because it is not easy when you have somebody who wants to beat you somebody, you want to beat them and they want to beat you so you just have to stay focused and make sure that it is serious business when you go on the track I enjoy the rivalry.
SOUNDBITES: Veronica Campbell-Brown
q. This is not a race for the gold between just you and Felix is it?
Definitely, everybody in the final is a contender and everybody who makes the final has a pretty good chance of winning because anything can happen I always tell myself that a gold medal is not guaranteed so you have to stay focused go out there with the right attitude and compete strong.
SOUNDBITES: Veronica Campbell-Brown
q. It’s not guaranteed that you will get to the final is it?
Definitely you have to take it round by round, there are three rounds before the final and as I said before anything can happen, you have to just be wise about it and do everything you can to makes the finals because nothing else matters.
SOUNDBITES: Veronica Campbell-Brown\
q. What’s your relationship like with Felix?
I wouldn’t say we hate each other it is all part of the sport it is just competition, you speak off the track but not on the track, its all about business, its just part of the sport.
SOUNDBITES: Veronica Campbell-Brown
q. The men’s 100m final is going to be a tough race, who do you think will win?
Definitely, I don’t know, nobody knows, we will have to see at the final they are all talented I think it will go down to the person who is the most mentally tough, that’s what I believe and the one who executes the race, and races the best because it is going to be very competitive.
