STORY:
Olympic 100m hopeful Derrick Atkins says the light should not be on Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt but on the 100m final itself because one or more of those athletes might not make the final. Atkins from the Bahamas has not had a fast summer on the track but is hoping to be back to his best here in China. He believes the athlete who is mentally strongest on the day will win gold and it’s not something that is inherent to all the sprinters taking part.
Atkins won Silver at the World Championships in Osaka Japan last year, beaten to the line by Tyson Gay he hopes to go one better in Beijing and win gold. Asafa Powell managed only third in that race and has now lost his world record for the distance to Usain Bolt who ran a time of 9.72 in May of this year. Atkins says he will set a new personal best in Beijing it is currently 9.91.
SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q. Everybody is talking about the big three sprinters?
Tyson has ran the American World Record and the fastest time ever in track and field, ever in any conditions. Bolt as the World Record and Asafa is the former World Record holder, and at any moment he could just go out there and hit a new world record. But I don’t think the light should be on just those three guys it should be on the Olympic final of the 100meters thats it, because you never know, they might mess around and never make the final you never know what can happen.
SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q. tell me about your form?
I feel like this year I have not run up to par how I did last year, everytime i stepped on the track it was like ten zeros or sub ten but this year has been a ’yoyo’ it has been up and down, theres been alot of different things going on outside of the track that affected that in some ways and I’m just trying to get back to where I was.

SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q.how is your state of mind is your head right?
Definately have the right head, there is no doubt in my mind that when it comes down to it i am going to be prepared, I am going to be ready. Everybody is going to be physically fit at this level of track and field and in sports in general, its all about your mental attitude and how you approach it. Some people are mentally weak and some people are mentally strong and some people use their physical attributes to compensate for their mental weakness, you know what I mean? I wouldn’t call any names or say anything about that is just the nature of the sport. I think mentally that is where the medal is at, who comes and shows up when it counts.

SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q. how do you get a strong state of mind?
Some people are genetically born with that dominate mind set and that concrete confidence. Some people have to grow and develope that and others just never get it. You can do all the other stuff the outside stuff but it is all in you head. Only you can change the way you think only you can change the way you approach things, no coach can help you no therapist, what it boils down to is it is all about you.

SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q. Usain Bolt has been described as a freak of nature? What do you think?
I would say he is a phenomenon, even when he was a junior athlete, at the age of 17 running 19.9 come on now, that’s just something unheard of back then, it wasn’t that long ago and he now, you say a freak of nature? From 10.0  to 9.7 that is a huge jump and he’s a very talented kid, I can’t take nothing from him, he’s done great things and it’s all going to boil down to  who can handle the pressure and who is tough enough.

SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q. Are you hungry enough for gold?
Hungry? Son, Hungry can’t sum up what I feel, its beyond Hungry, i want it so bad I can taste it  I wake up dreaming about it, I wake up excited about it, its almost like it already happened but it hasn’t happened yet. It’s almost forseeing what is going to happen Everybody is going for gold, everybody is going for a medal, but there are only three spots and only one top spot and at the end of the day, let the best man win.

SOUNDBITE: Derrick Atkins
q. what would you say to those who think you just don’t have what it takes?
I would say go back to last year, everybody had me paste, for a bronze medal, and I came in there and I did what I had to do and I got the silver if the race was a little longer I would have got the gold so I would sum it up as saying impossible is nothing, I feel like the media can put who ever they want in the spotlight they can have a paper winner, as they call it, but at the end of the day it is going to be the man who comes out there and proves that he is the best.

STORY:
Cuba’s Dayron Robles says arch-rival and Olympic Champion Liu Xiang is almost perfect. The World Record holder at 110m hurdles believes nearly everything about China’s Liu Xiang’s race is great. A complement before the two meet in Beijing to do battle for that Olympic gold medal. It is expected to be one of the most mouth-watering encounters of the games. Robles clocked a time of 12.87 for the distance to beat China’s World and Olympic Champion Liu Xiang’s previous time of 12.88 set in Lausanne, Switzerland back in 2006. Liu was at the IAAF event at Ostrava in the Czech Republic this June to see 21-year old Robles beat his World Record, Xiang only managed to finish fourth is however still considered as the favourite to take Gold on home soil.
Cuban high Jump legend Javier Sotomayor who is now helping coach Robles says the athlete is a little nervous although this to be expected at an Olympic Games. He went on to level the playing field though by suggesting that China’s Lui Xian is probably going through the same experience.

EXPECTED PICTURES & SOUND BITES:
INTERVIEW WITH DAYRON ROBLES 110M WORLD RECORD HOLDER (CUBA)
SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q. You’ve been wearing and adidas TECHFIT POWERWEB sprint suit recently.  How does it feel and what difference has it made to your race?
It’s true my sprint suit is very tight fitting.  I’ve been wearing it for the past year and I really feel the difference wearing this suit and everyday I notice how it helps me more and more.

SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q. What part of your race are you trying to improve at the moment?
For a long time now I have been working on all aspects of my race.  I haven’t focused on one particular part.  I’m always looking for perfection in my overall race.

SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q.They say your great rival Liu Xiang doesn’t have the best start out of the blocks…do you think he has been working hard on that aspect of his race?
Yes of course he’s working on that part but he really is the perfect athlete and the result of that is that he has everything…or well nearly everything about his race is great.

SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q.Do you think there is a lot of pressure on Liu Xiang because the Olympic Games are here in Beijing?
Well he has been working hard towards these Games.  He has known for a long time that the Games were on their way and now the moment is here.  Everybody has prepared themselves for these games especially him so I’m sure he is really well prepared.

SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q.You must have a lot of confidence now after setting a new World Record?
Yes I feel really good about the record but I don’t get carried away…I have continued to work hard.

SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q.What do you think of the Beijing, the athlete village?
Everything is perfect here.  This Olympic Feeling is something that you only experience probably once in your lifetime.  They only come around every four years.

SOUNDBITE: Dayron Robles
Q. Is it a dream to be here in Beijing?
Yes it is a dream that has become a reality.  Little by little it has been sinking in…now I am at an Olympic Games, maybe a little bit earlier than I expected, and this has always been one of my dreams.

SOUNDBITES: Javier Sotomayor
q. You are now working with Dayron Robles he is now the favourite against Liu Xiang in Biejing…what do you think about that?
Well this is one race everyone is waiting for…I think it is the most anticipated race of these Olympic Games.  I as a Cuban as a friend of Dayron have a lot of confidence in his capabilities and I really hope that he wins.

SOUNDBITE: Javier Sotomayor
q. How is Dayron managing the pressure at the moment?
Well I think at an Olympic Games everyone is a little bit nervous.  The key is to control your nerves. I’m sure that Lui Xian is just as nervous.
