STORY:
Word Champion triple jump Champion Nelson Evora says he feels no pressure going into the opening rounds of Olympic competition. Evora established a personal best and set a new Portuguese record with a triple jump of 17.74 at the World Championships last August and finished third with a bronze at the IAAF World indoor Championships in Valencia this year. The 24 year old who speaking in Beijing just days before his competition gets underway also thanked his adopted nation Portugal for allowing him to carry their national flag at the opening ceremony. Born in Cote D'Ivoire Evora has embraced the new technology of ‘Tech-fit’ running suits wholeheartedly. He believes it is only a matter of time before all athletes adopt this high-tech sporting kit. Evora claims it helps aerodynamically in terms of weight and movement. Evora who competes for Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica says the weather in China is perfect for a big jump but he stopped short of predicting a new world record.

q- is there extra pressure being the world champion?
No I don’t think that is a pressure for me I think it is motivation to be strong here, I train for that it is a dream I have never been in the Olympic games before with that objective so I am feeling this is good for me. Last year I was world champion and this year I will try to do a good result to.
SOUNDBITE: Nelson Evora
q- what do you think of the great Britian jumpers?
Yes Great Britain has good jumpers Phillips is in good form, that ok because every competition is a new competition we will see.
SOUNDBITE: Nelson Evora
q- how was it to carry the Portugal flag at the opening ceremony?
For me it was very good to be the flag guy because there are very good athletes in Portugal at the moment I think they have the best team and they choose me to hold the flag at the opening ceremony so I say thank you to Portugal for that.
SOUNDBITE: Nelson Evora
q- is the weather good for jumping?
Of course I like this weather because I am African I don’t like cold weather I think for the jumpers and the speed runners this is the best because our bodies response fast in the conditions it is perfect for track and field
SOUNDBITE: Nelson Evora
q- can you break the world record in Beijing?
First I want to jump far I will not think about the world record 18 meters and then maybe break my personal best and then maybe do the 18 meters
SOUNDBITE: Nelson Evora
Q – how important is experience?
Experience is very important in everything we do but I think I have a lot of experience because I do athletes from 6 years old every time I have been going to the big competitions and trying to do my best, here I am feeling very good no pressure that’s where I feel very well that is the place for me.

STORY
Two-time Olympic and World 400m Champion Jeremy Wariner says he is looking forward to the feeling of crossing the finish line first in Beijing and expects to enjoy it more than his victory 4 years ago in Athens. Wariner was in confident mood at the Sport in Art Exhibition in Beijing. The American was there to promote the sale of his painting that will make up part of a Sotheby’s lot in Hong Kong this October. The American and a host of international athletes including footballer David Beckham and US Basketball star Gilbert Arenas were asked to produce artwork for a television campaign that work will now be sold at auction and the money given to the Children’s charity ‘right to play.’ Wariner says his painting perfectly represents his state of mind on the track and hopes that it will raise at least some money for charity. The US athlete is desperate to defend his Olympic title and to break Michael Johnson’s 400m World record. Wariner has been surprisingly tested and beaten this season by fellow American sprinter LaShawn Merritt although the Texan believes its added pressure that helps him to improve. Merritt produced a shock defeat of Wariner in the US Olympic trails in July and will hope to repeat the achievement in Beijing.

q- what did they ask you to do?
They gave me some paint and said just create distractions on the board so I just splashed some paint everywhere to simulate distractions basically the paint is the fans the other competitors officials everything around me that I don’t need to be worried about when I’m on the track
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q- your painting is in a gallery do you feel like a famous painter?
No I still don’t feel like a famous painter but it is amazing to see the artwork that I did in a major gallery like this, I never thought in my wildest dreams that it would be in a place like this, but to see it with professional painters is great to know
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q- What does it feel like to cross the finish line as a winner?
Well it depends where I am at a big stage like this when I crossed in 2004 I didn’t feel tied I was happy and I didn’t really understand what I just did until later on in the week because I just thought of it as another race and I had a really to get ready for, so I didn’t really understand what it was so now that I new, so this time I hope it will be a little bit of a different feeling than it was last time.
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q- does your painting represent how you feel on the track?
I believe so because the one thing I see when I look through my glasses is nothing than what I know, so it shows that through my glasses I see nothing, I see only what I have done in the past and how it has got me ready for where I am now, so I can’t do anything more, just the run the way I know how.
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q-what will happen to you painting?
I know it is going to be auctioned off for a good charity so I am excited about that whether is goes for a dollar or a couple of hundred thousand or something like that I’m glad to see I am helping out some way
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q- which of the other athlete painting do you like and why?
I like Gilberts because how he used it to motivate him a little more turning a zero into a hero a lot of athlete do that they find the negative that people are putting on them and turn it into a positive, to motivate them to get better, be on top and do the best they can
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q- do you like David Beckham’s painting?
I can remember his story a lot of it had to do with threats, just be able to get past that and not worry about what other people were saying to him and just keep playing the sport that he loves to do shows a lot of courage on his part.
q. do you relate to that when you hear things about you or read about yourself in the newspapers?
A little bit but I really don’t read what people write about me I try to look past that and really worry about what I need to do and get better at it.
SOUNDBITE: Jeremy Wariner
q- why do you have your running shoe made specifically for you?
I have a different running style than other people each foot is different than the other  when I run on my right one , it hit it on the side and roll to the inside of my foot so when I come off I’m not coming off on the centre of the plate I am coming off on the side so  what they try to do is put these teeth right here so it gives me the most pressure where I need it. And with the other shoe I am hitting it straight in the middle and going straight off the front so that why they put them in the front rather than on the side like the other spike so each spike is made different for my foot but at the same time each one is doing the thing I
