SPORTS NEWS VIDEO 1 Story: GOLD MEDAL reaction Valerie Vili Duration: 4’20 min Delivery format: mini DV Online: Mpeg2 Location: Beijing, China Language: English
STORY: Women’s Shot put gold medalist Valerie Vili says she never thought she would win an Olympic gold medal. The Zealander who won Shot Put gold in Beijing gave thanks to her long time coach Kirsten Hellier for 10 years of advice and assistance. Vili dedicated the win to her mother who died when she was just 15 years old, her older sister Vivienne Adams and her niece Amka were given an emotional greeting when they met up in Beijing today. The Olympic medal joins her World Championship one she picked up in Osaka Japan last year. Soundbite 1: Valerie Vili Q: did you ever think you would win a gold medal at the Olympics? A: Definitely when I started athletics I used to watch it on tv and stuff like that but never in my mind I ever thought I could be sitting here with a gold medal round my neck, but about five years ago it all came together when things got a little bit more intense in training and got very serious, I started to compete in international meets and then boom!
Soundbite 2: Valerie Vili Q: how do you feel? A: Its just absolutely amazing, its just something that you’ve worked so many years for and through tears and sweating and heart ache and everything it just all comes down to one moment and one day and this is the end result so at least I can die saying I’ve won a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Soundbite 3: Valerie Vili Q: how long have you been working toward this? A: Ten years preparation in total you know and that’s how long I’ve been doing this sport for so in ten years I’ve managed to achieve so many things but this is the icing on the cake of everything really.
Soundbite 4: Valerie Vili Q: what part did your coach play? A: Huge, she’s been with me since day one and we make a great partnership, we’re a great team and everything we’ve done in the last ten years is leading up to this Olympic Games and it just all works out, she knows me inside out, she’s a woman so she knows the woman side of things and its just awesome to have her as part of the team, and yeah – pretty unstoppable really.
Soundbite 5: Valerie Vili Q: what was it like on the podium? A: Absolutely amazing, very emotional, hearing the national anthem was the most emotional side of things because you sort of reflect on the whole experience and the whole competition, also the last year the last ten years altogether so it’s just fantastic, Awesome!
Soundbite 6: Valerie Vili Q: what will you do now? A: Well I’m going to do what I do every year and every day and that’s get on with life. Next year I go back to work, I start training when I get back home, head over to Europe and finish my season, then take a bit of a break and get straight back into it. I’ve got the World Championships next year and New Delhi the year after that, so no stop or rest for the wicked really. It’s just all part of life, this was a moment, this was history and yes I’ll enjoy it and soak it all in, but once we’re two months down the line down the track we’re be back to square one and preparing for next year.
SPORTS NEWS VIDEO 2 Story: Russian Pole-vaulter Yevgeniy Lukyanenko previews the event Duration: 4’00’’ Delivery format: mini DV Online: Mpeg2 Location: Beijing, China Language: English & Russian
STORY: Russian Pole-vaulter medal prospect Yevgeniy Lukyanenko says he thinks the gold medal will be a battle between America’s Brad Walker, Australia’s Steven Hooker and himself. The Russian stopped short of saying he would win gold in Beijing and admitted he was not focusing on Walker or Hooker who he new little about because his mind was currently on just qualification for the final of the event. Lukyanenko who has a personal best of 6.01 does not believe that Sergey Bubka’s world record of 6.14 is in danger but the Olympic record of 5.95 meters set by American Tim Mack in Athens four years ago might be.
SOUNDBITE: Yevgeniy Lukyanenko q- how will you deal with Brad Walker? I think Brad Walker is not the competitor I am focusing on I am focusing on me, the one I am focusing one is me.
SOUNDBITE: Yevgeniy Lukyanenko q- are conditions good for jumping? Yes I think the conditions are very good we will see at the tack, we will see what the wind is like s the wind is good I think the performance will be good.
SOUNDBITE: Yevgeniy Lukyanenko q- what do you know about Steven Hooker? I know that he is from Australia and that is all I know about him he is jumping 6 meters , very good
SOUNDBITE: Yevgeniy Lukyanenko I think that these three men will have a battle for a gold medal but before the battle there must be qualification so first let us have qualification
SOUNDBITE: Yevgeniy Lukyanenko q- is 6 meters a barrier for some athletes? No I don’t know why six meters is such a barrier for some athletes, because when I jumped six meter I didn’t think oh 6 meters, this is difficult I just jump it, that’s all.
SOUNDBITE: Yevgeniy Lukyanenko q- will you win the gold medal? I don’t know if I win the gold medal, first if qualification and after that the final so we will see.
SPORTS NEWS VIDEO 3 Story: 10,000 meter reaction from middle distance legend Haile Gebrselassie Duration: approx 2’30 min Delivery format: mini DV Online: Mpeg2 Location: Beijing, China Language: English
STORY:
Haile Gebrselassie said he tried his best to win the Olympic 10,000 final but could not keep up with the sprint finish having trained only for Marathon running. The legendary Ethiopian who finished just 6th in Beijing was happy to see his countrymen Sileshi Sihine & Kenenisa Bekele take silver and gold respectively in the event. Bekele's time of 27 minutes 1.17 seconds was an Olympic record, bettering the time he set in 2004. Thirty-five year old Haile was seen congratulating the younger men with a big smile on his face, an embodiment of the Olympic spirit. Gebrselassie who remains adamant that it was the right decision for him not to run in the Olympic Marathon also made a prediction that he would break the World record for the Marathon when he runs in Berlin, he added for artistic license the words, ‘by a big margin.’
Haile SOUNDBITE q. How well do you think Bekele ran, could you have done it faster? If it would have been faster at the beginning there was a chance for me Well the time what Bekele ran, was a good time, it was an Olympic record and as I told you it was a possibility really to run more faster.
Haile SOUNDBITE q. What problems did you have in the race? The only problem I had in the last 300, 200 metres was I could not sprint anymore because of my preparation, if I really know to try to win a medal I should prepare serious speed training but that is coming, that is difficult for me because I become injured easily. That is why I don’t want to do that and this is a risk keeping up for the next one.
Haile SOUNDBITE q. The conditions yesterday were good for the Women’s marathon Are you wishing you were running it or are you thinking your happy you chose not to? I’m happy I didn’t do it, really. Well my plan was to do it with something else, so you know in 5 or 6 weeks time I’m going to run in Berlin and do something for the world record that is why I decide to run only the 10,000m here.
Haile SOUNDBITE q. You are smiling and you came 6th, its not all about winning is it? Well first of all just don’t forget this is the Olympics. Even just to participate is something very good, but to win a medal is something special.
Haile SOUNDBITE q. Are you planning to break World Record again in Berlin? One of my plans is just to break the record, otherwise I don’t see this record by end of this year, if I don’t break it. I have to break it in Berlin. Just if I will break it must be by a big margin.
