STORY: Nigerian Olympic football coach Samson Siasia says the Argentina players ‘fall to the fall like little girls.’ Speaking ahead of Saturdays Olympic final Siasia’s controversial comments are sure to make for an exciting encounter between the two teams. Siasia admitted that Lionel Messi will be a difficult player for his team to handle but was sure that if they remained confident and disciplined they would win the gold medal. The tie is a repeat of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic final a game that Nigeria won. Goal keeper Ambroise Vanzekin believes his team can cause another Olympic upset. More recent history however has seen Argentina knock the African’s out of the Under 21 World Cup in 2005, a penalty incident marred that game for the Nigerian’s something they say they want to avoid this time around. Argentina beat Brazil and Nigeria defeated Belgium 4-1 to get to the final.
SOUNDBITE: Ambroise Vanzekin (goal keeper) Q - have you thought about the 1996 Olympic final in Atlanta? I keep on remembering back to 1996 Nigeria v Argentina in the final and it will happen again we will do what we did in 1996 we will do the same thing we will win this time again.
SOUNDBITE: Victor Anichebe Q - what do you say to people who think you can’t beat Argentina? Who ever says in football that no one can beat some one is foolish because there is always a chance that you can beat them no matter who they have in their team Messi, Riquelme, we have big players in our team too, we didn’t get to the final by chance, and especially in the final over 90 minutes anything can happen.
SOUNDBITE: Victor Anichebe Q- might Argentina try to upset your way of playing? If they want to fall on the floor let them fall on the floor, we will just play our own game the referee is the one who makes the decisions we are not going to make the decisions so if he deems it as a foul or if he doesn’t that is his decision we are just going to get on with it because if you start fighting with the referee you are not going to be concentrating on the game any more so we are just going to play our own game what ever they want to do just let them do it.
SOUNDBITE: Victor Obinna q- all the talk is about Argentina winning does this bother you? We deserve a little respect too reaching the finals of this competition is not easy we have worked hard to be here and we deserve a little bit of respect
SOUNDBITE: Promise Isaac (captain) q- might the harder more physically game you play, help Argentina gain more free kicks or even another penalty like in 2005? No really as you can see we play physical football and I can remember back in 2005 they gave them a penalty and they won against us so we have learnt our lesson now so we must play to instruction and make sure we tactical that.
SOUNDBITE: Samson Siasia (Coach) q- Will Lionel Messi and the way Argentina play make things difficult you? We are going to have a lot of problems with Messi we know that, we will try as much as possible to contain him at bay and not let him get close to the 18 yard box we know the Argentines are fans of falling on the ground like little girls so we will try to prevent that we know their tricks, a touch in the box and then penalty you saw what they did with the Brazilians we know exactly how they are going to play Riquelme is passing the ball to the strikers I don’t want to talk too much about our game plan but it is going to be difficult for them to do anything with us.
SOUNDBITE: Samson Siasia q- what will you tell your players before they go on the pitch? They have to be very focused they need to mind when they kick in the defense and not to give away free kicks and put the team in danger, but most important they have to play with a lot of confidence just because they are playing Argentina they must not be scared and forget about the tactical discipline so if they do that I think we will be cut and dry.
