STORY:
Kenyan born Mubarak Hassan Shami may have been joking when he suggested that Marathon World record holder Haile Gebraselassie might have died if he had run in the Beijing event. Shami light heartedly added that the legendary Ethiopian would not have finished the Beijing Marathon and was right not to run in it due to the weather conditions, the low altitude and the humidity. The Kenyan is one of the favorites for the Olympic gold medal as is Jaouad Gharib of Morocco. Gharib would not talk about his tactics for the event although he did say that everybody in the field was a dangerous competitor as they could all manage to win the race on the day. Jaouad Gharib who only began running seriously at the age of 22 won Marathons at both the 2003 Paris World Championships and at Helsinki in 2005. Hassan Shami won the Paris Marathon in 2007 and a Silver medal at the World Championships in Osaka Japan. He has a personal best of 2:07:19.

Jaouad Gharib
Q: have your preparations been good?
A: I am very happy with my preparation which I have done in Morocco. My main goal is to do as well as possible and go for the gold.

Jaouad Gharib  - French
Q:2 no Haile opens the door to the rest?
A: Having Haile there or not doesn’t change anything. Everyone is here for the Olympics, it’s not like a marathon in London or Paris, everyone has a chance to win and everyone is here to win, my preparation doesn’t change. You have to fear everyone in the race.

Jaouad Gharib  - Arabic
Q:2 no Haile opens the door to the rest?

A: Having Haile there or not doesn’t change anything. Everyone is here for the Olympics, it’s not like a marathon in London or Paris, everyone has a chance to win and everyone is here to win, my preparation doesn’t change. You have to fear everyone in the race.

Jaouad Gharib
Q:3 do you feel the pressure before the race?
A: In the big marathons like the Olympics I do feel some stress but as soon as the gun goes off I don’t think about anything else than trying to win.

SOUNDBITE: Mubarak Hassan Shami  (English)
q. How is your fitness?
Fitness and mind is tough because I have a small injury.  When you have this injury in you leg and you are an athlete and you have something that disturbs you, even your mind is not the same as a normal athlete you know.

SOUNDBITE: Mubarak Hassan Shami (English)
q. Tell me about Haile Gebrselassie
as well as Gebrselassie you notice that this climate is not possible to run, because a high altitude of 4000 here is sea leval and it is humid and it is very hot, it is impossible, for him to run a competition like this, obviously he will die, because it is very tough..ha ha..
Because he is a stong athlete a competition like this does not need people like Gebreselassie  because his capacity engine is very big gallon so when he tries to move with these conditions, absolutely he will not finish!

SOUNDBITE: Mubarak Hassan Shami (English)
q. What is special about the Olympics?
You know, accordingy to me it is like everything, to become an Olympic Champion is a very big reward, nothing compares to a medal here.

Story: GOLD MEDAL REACTION: 110m Hurdles Cuba’s Dayron Robles
Duration: Approx  4 mins
Delivery format: mini DV
Online: Mpeg2
Location: Beijing, China
Language: Spanish

STORY
Cuba’s Dayron Robles says it would have been a more emotional victory had China’s Liu Xiang been in the race. Robles claimed gold in the 110m hurdles in Beijing a race that took place without former World record holder Liu Xiang who pulled out due to an injury. Twenty one year old Robles clocked a time of 12.87 for the distance to beat China’s World and Olympic Champion Liu Xiang’s previous time of 12.88 at the IAAF event at Ostrava in the Czech Republic this June the stage had been set for a showdown between the worlds two best hurdles but with Xiang unable to compete Robles took the gold in convincing fashion in 12.93 seconds, two-100ths of a second slower than the Olympic record Liu set in winning the Athens 2004 gold medal.

Robles
Q1: Talk us through the race?
A: The race was quite relaxed. I tried to get the best possible start and when I realized that I was half a step ahead of the field then I really focused on running a race that was going to ensure a gold medal for myself.

Robles
Q2:Was it easier without Liu Xiang?
A: A race is never easy when you have such an amount of world class hurdlers like mine but I think if Liu Xiang had have been in the race it would have been more emotional

Robles
Q3: was the end of a lot of hard work?
A:It’s a job that has taken four years to achieve and to be honest it was a huge moment for me.  For the moment it hasn’t really sunk in, I am still really quite relaxed and I sort of feel like I am still focused on another race.  But these Olympic times have really made a huge impression on me.  This is the biggest moment a sportsman can ever experience.

Robles
Q4:Do you feel a responsibility to the Cuban people?
A: There is always a huge responsibility racing for Cuba.  Fans at home really demand the best from us and they are very knowledgeable and they love following sport but sometimes that can make things tough for us.

Q5: What next for you?
A: To be honest I just take things as they come.  I started very young and already I have had some setbacks that I have had to overcome and I will continue to learn things in this sporting world and fulfill my responsibility as an athlete.

Q6: Did you feel a lot of pressure?
A: The pressure comes from the team around me not from the people back home.  I know I have to win for myself and for the team that has been supporting me firstly.  You know I had a tough time at the last two world championships and so I knew I had to prepare myself to arrive here in the best possible mental and physical form and that’s exactly what I did.

I plan on continuing with the fencing and I want to take part in the London Olympics as well and my plans for the next four years will be to do half day job and the other half sports.  That went well for the last four years and that is what I am going to be doing for the future.

SOUNDBITE: Britta Heidemann (German)
Yes it was unbelievable that I was able to win the gold medal there were only ten chances fro the German team to win gold and I won one of them.

SOUNDBITE: Britta Heidemann (German)
There might have been some pressure but I didn’t read very many newspapers so it was not a problem for me.
