STORY:
USA Olympic football team captain Christine Rampone said her team won women’s gold in Beijing because they stuck together and frustrated Brazil in the final.  America beat Brazil 1-0 the only goal of the game was scored by Carli Lloyd in the sixth minute of extra time. The result was a carbon copy of Athens 2004 where the same teams got through to the final and the score line and outcome were the same. The victory by the U.S. women's team was the 1,000th gold medal ever won by the United States in all Olympics.  Lori Chalupny, Heather O’Reilly, Kathryn Markgraf, Aly Wagner and captain Christine Rampone came out to meet the Chinese public and celebrate their victory in Beijing. Markgraf said the result for her was the end of 32 years hard work and the 18 women team effort was only possible ibecause they believed in themselves.

SOUNDBITE: Kathryn Markgraf
This means 32 years of hard work and it means 18 players playing as one to beat Brazil in the final.

SOUNDBITE: Kathryn Markgraf
I think every game is different we have a lot of respect for Brazil but we believe in ourselves a lot so regardless of the number of chances they got when we stopped them or the missed a shot they got a little bit more frustrated and that meant that there was a little bit more of a window that we could attack them.

SOUNDBITE: Aly Wagner
No I think that we new going into the at game that anybody could come out as the winner  that is respecting you opponent but that is believing in your self , of course the game could go either way and we know what a quality side Brazil is , but trained all year long we have trained years to put it together for the Olympic final and we believed regardless of what anybody else said we knew we could do it.

SOUNDBITE: Christine Rampone (Team captain) GROUP BITE
I believe so I think they came with everything they had they had their speed their spark and their personality but we stuck together and defensively we frustrated them that made it our game and it showed.

Story: GOLD MEDAL REACTION: Nelson Evora of Portugal wins Men’s triple Jump
Duration:  3:40
Delivery format: mini DV
Online: Mpeg2
Location: Beijing, China
Language: English & Portuguese

STORY:
World and now Olympic triple jump champion Nelson Evora said he new he would produce a big jump in the final of the event because the conditions were right. Evora who broke down in tears having won the gold medal also says it will take some time for the victory to sink in.
Evora, who became a Portuguese citizen in 2002 after previously competing for the Cape Verde Islands, waited until his fourth attempt to take the lead, hop, skip and jumping out to 17.67 meters on Thursday. In a nail-biting competition during which the lead and potential podium places chopped and changed in front of a vociferous, hand-clapping crowd, Britain's much-fancied Phillips Idowu claimed silver with a best of 17.62m. Leevan Sanders of the Bahamas took bronze with 17.59m. Evora who was born in Cote D'Ivoire established a personal best and set a new Portuguese record with a triple jump of 17.74 at the World Championships last August and finished third with a bronze at the IAAF World indoor Championships in Valencia this year. The Olympic gold is Portugal’s first in 12 years.
The 24 year old has embraced the new technology of ‘Tech-fit’ running suits wholeheartedly.
He believes it is only a matter of time before all athletes adopt this high-tech sporting kit.
Evora claims it helps aerodynamically in terms of weight and movement. Evora competes for Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica.

SOUNDBITE: (Translation)
Yes of course I believed I could do a big jump because I was focused on doing a very big jump I knew it would happen a big jump in that condition so I just tried to keep focused.
